GUBayArea - Summer Update

First and foremost, we are looking for those who would like to become involved in various activities, i.e. the Gala, Business Forum, Service, 20-30's, Faith, Marketing/Promotion etc. GUBayArea has been fortunate the past 3 years to enjoy great support from its members. Since we have grown by leaps and bounds since 2006, we are calling out to our members (new & old) to help us plan and execute our programs. GUBayArea needs your ideas and energy to insure another incredible year as GU's "biggest & best" Alumni Chapter.

Summer Events: We have a very large and geographically diverse organization, for which it is a challenge to plan and host events that are convenient and within a reasonable range our members. As such, it is important, if not essential, that we host events in the major membership areas, i.e. San Francisco, South Bay, East Bay, North Bay and Sacramento. To this end, our thought is to host a summer function in each of these areas, but need your help to do so. These events can be anything that you want them to be, a house/pool party, a social at a local restaurant or other such venue, a service project, a wine tasting etc. etc. The major ingredient is that our membership steps up and takes the lead. We can provide the membership contact numbers and email addresses, and we can do the email blasts and record the RSVP's. The main ingredient is member participation. How about you?

Thoughts and Prayers for Harry Sladich

I heard last night that our beloved Harry Sladich passed away, finally succumbing to a battle with prostate cancer after a courageous fight. I know how much so many of you will miss Harry as I and my fellow administrators do right now. Harry's good heart, sound judgment, work ethic, knowledge of Gonzaga and above all, his love for the University and the many individuals constituting it will be irreplaceable. Harry was a mentor and a father figure to so many of us. I include here the main points of a resolution which the Trustees presented to Harry last month. It describes quite briefly his many accomplishments on behalf of his beloved alma mater.

The Gonzaga University Board of Trustees passed a unanimous resolution at its Dec. 12 meeting in Seattle to honor Executive Vice President Harry Sladich who has devoted himself - mind, body and spirit - to Gonzaga for 46 years. Sladich is the only non-Jesuit to assume Gonzaga's presidency, not only once but twice, in 1991 and from 1997-98 - some of the most difficult years in Gonzaga's history. The secretary for the Board for 28 years, Sladich also has served in the following roles at Gonzaga:

  • Director of placement 1962-71;
  • Adjunct professor, School of Business Administration, 1963 to present;
  • Director of personnel, 1964-71;
  • Director of financial aid, 1966-74;
  • Director of administrative services, 1967-71;
  • Assistant to the president 1971-83;
  • Assistant corporate secretary, 1980-90;
  • Acting president 1991;
  • Secretary of the Corporation of GonzagaUniversity, 1991 to present;
  • Acting president, 1997-98;
  • Vice president, administration and planning 1983-2001; and
  • Executive vice president 2001 to present.
Sladich has been of invaluable service to Gonzaga Presidents Fathers Bernard J. Coughlin, S.J., and Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., and a catalyst for good will and benefaction to Gonzaga for 46 years, especially with the Montana community and the Butte Rats in particular.

The resolution also states Sladich has been an outstanding friend and confidant to Gonzaga presidents, 12 Board chairs, and hundreds of Trustees, Regents, benefactors, colleagues and friends.

He received the DeSmet Medal - Gonzaga highest honor - in May 2007 and received the Top Dog award, the highest award given by the Board of Trustees, last month. Sladich also receivde the Distinguished Alumni Merit Award from his alma mater in 1996.

In closing, the resolution declared that Harry Sladich be declared most loyal alumnus of Gonzaga University and Trustee Emeritus, and that his photograph and name be included among Gonzaga's presidents, on the second floor of College Hall, and that a new award for loyalty to Gonzaga be established in his name.

A vigil service will be Monday, Jan. 12, 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be Tuesday, Jan. 13, 10:30 a.m. Both services will be at St. Aloysius Church.

A reception will follow the funeral Mass at Cataldo Hall, and burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery later in the day.

Please continue to keep Harry and his family – wife Marguerite, children Harry G., Jennifer and Suzanne, and his many grandchildren – in your prayers.

I know Harry would appreciate your thoughts and prayers. He was a man of deep faith and love, and repeatedly told me that my prayers were the most important gift to him. I know his wife Marguerite, children Harry Jr., Jennifer and Suzanne and his many grandchildren would also appreciate your prayers. I will send another message including funeral arrangements when these become available. On behalf of Harry's family, which is so much a part of our Gonzaga family, I thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Robert J. Spitzer, S.J.
Gonzaga University President

Twins Owner Pohlad Passes Away at 93

Family well known for philanthropic efforts in Twin Cities
By Kelly Thesier / MLB.com

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins owner Carl Pohlad (GU '37-'39), a billionaire financier who became best known after purchasing the Twins in 1984, passed away on Monday at his home in Edina, Minn. He was 93 years old.

The son of a poor family during the Great Depression, Pohlad rose from humble beginnings to head a family-owned network of banking, bottling, real estate and other companies. Forbes magazine wrote in September that Pohlad was worth around $3.6 billion, ranking him No. 102 on the magazine's list of America's wealthiest people.

"Carl was the leader of our family as well as the founder and leader of our family businesses," Pohlad's three sons, Jim (GU '75), Bob and Bill (GU '78) said in a statement. "We've loved and respected him and are enormously proud of his accomplishments. And we will all miss him deeply."

"Since the day Carl Pohlad entered Major League Baseball, he made significant contributions to our game," Commissioner Bud H. Selig said in a written statement. "He has been a true leader in our sport for the past 25 years. His devotion to the Minnesota Twins, the Twin Cities and Major League Baseball was remarkable.

"In my long career, I have never met a more loyal and caring human being. We will miss Carl and all of baseball joins me in sending our deepest condolences to the Pohlad family for the loss of our friend and partner."

The third of eight children, Pohlad was born on Aug. 23, 1915, and had a strong work ethic instilled in him while working in the fields near Des Moines, Iowa. After leaving high school, Pohlad went on to win a football scholarship to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., in 1937 thanks to being recruited by Gonzaga alumnus Bing Crosby. During his football days, Pohlad also made some money by boxing in clubs along the West Coast. Pohlad left school during his senior year because, as he said, he was making too much money in his side job of selling used cars that had been repossessed by banks.

Pohlad then returned home to Iowa to work at Federal Discount Corp., a finance company headed by his sister Helen's husband, Russell Stotesbery, before being drafted into the Army in 1942. He served in the Army from 1943-46, fighting during World War II in France, Germany, and Austria. He was wounded in battle and was awarded three Bronze Stars and four Purple Hearts during his service.

Pohlad would reunite with his brother-in-law following the war as they took control of Marquette Bank in Minneapolis in 1949. Pohlad gained sole control of it a few years later when his sister's husband died. The acquisition of the bank was the start of Pohlad establishing himself as one of the most well-known businessmen in the Twin Cities. And he was known to many as a stoic dealmaker who never retired because he loved his work so much.

After returning home from the war, Pohlad also met his wife, Eloise, whom he married in Iowa in 1947. She raised their three sons and became a very influential person during Pohlad's ownership of the Twins. Eloise is said to have played a role in keeping Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett in Minnesota when he had a chance to be a free agent. And prior to her death in November 2003, Eloise and Carl attended nearly every Twins home game together.

"The Minnesota Twins family is saddened by the death of our owner and strongest supporter, Carl R. Pohlad," the Twins said in a statement Monday night. "Since purchasing the club in 1984, Carl's leadership, vision and passion for Twins baseball inspired the franchise to win two World Series championships, two American League pennants and six division titles. That on-field success would never have been possible without the loyalty and support from Mr. Pohlad and his family.

"Off the field, Mr. Pohlad was a true pioneer helping lead Major League Baseball's effort to create enhanced revenue sharing and competitive balance. But his enduring legacy will be the values he instilled from top to bottom -- a commitment to hard work, family, and community. Carl always viewed the Twins as a community institution -- worthy of preserving, growing and being something of which we could all be proud."

Gala 2008

Gonzaga's Winemakers

Thank you to those who attended this year's Gala 2008 at the Italian Athletic Club in North Beach. Thank you also to our Gonzaga Alumni winemakers for providing an excellent array of wines. A fun time was had by all.

Jed Steele (GU '66), San Francisco native and star GU basketball player under Hank Anderson, founded Steele and Shooting Star Wines in 1991. Prior to that time, he was the founding winemaker, general manager, and VP of Production at Kendall Jackson for the first nine vintages of that company. Prior to his adventures at Kendall Jackson, Jed worked for 10 years for Edmeades, then a small independent winery in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County, as winemaker and vineyard manager. Jed began working in the wine business at Stony Hill Winery in the Napa Valley in 1968.

Kurt Beitler (GIF '97) directs Boheme farming and winemaking. He is preceded by four generations of California winemakers and earlier generations in Alsace, France. After college Kurt was encouraged by his grandfather to work with the family's Caymus Winery in Rutherford, Napa Valley. The diverse assignments led him to his first vineyard management position (Belle Glos Taylor Lane Vineyard) in Occidental, CA, where he later founded Boheme. Kurt produces 2005 Que Syrah Vineyard Syrah, 2006 Stuller Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2006 Taylor Ridge Vineyard, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Justin (GU '96) and Liz Wylie planted Va Piano Vineyards (Walla Walla, WA) in 1999 with the vision to make small lots of well-balanced, full-bodied reds that showcases Walla Walla's exceptional fruit. In 2004 they blended old world charm with modern day efficiency by building their Tuscan style tasting room and wine studio. In December of 2005, Va Piano celebrated its grand opening by releasing their first vintages, a 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2003 Syrah. In addition, they also produce a Semillon and the famed "Bruno Blend". The latter, dubbed after Fr. Bruno Segatta, the famous Italian priest, artist and world traveler.

Russell Bevan (GU '88) resides in the Napa Valley. Russell. a nationally know wine maker, consultant/critic, has announced Bevan Cellars inaugural release of its 2005 Showket Vineyard Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, a pure Oakville hillside Cabernet. Russell also is the wine maker at Dry Stack Vineyards, which produces a Syrah and an award winning Sauvignon Blanc. Russell's goal is to produce Cabernets like the great ones made in '95, '96 and '97, and his passion is "rich fruit flavors and decadent textures".

Katie Leonardini Melancon (GU '91) of Whitehall Lane Winery in the Napa Valley will again join us in celebrating our Gala. Whitehall Lane in Napa Valley's historic Rutherford appellation is owned by the the Leonardini Family of San Francisco. Its 110 acres of prime Valley-floor vineyards, including the Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena, is committed to making the finest Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Reserve wine. The winery continues to receive accolades and awards for producing some of the greatest wines in the world. In Wine Spectator Magazine's year-end ranking of wines, Whitehall Lane has been honored an unprecedented three times in five years for producing wines rated among the top five in the world. The winery has also been voted Winery of the Year from the Quarterly Review of Wines and Wine and Spirits Magazine.

Timberly Hughes (GIF '84-GU '86 ) and husband, Allan Ransely, founded the Takamatua Valley Vineyards in New Zealand in 2001. It is a small, boutique winery on the south island; and, they have been the winemaker, vineyard manager and general manager since inception. They currently produce Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and will harvest Riesling this year. Takamatua is certified organic. Timberly also owns and operates Jay's Wine Bar/Cafe in San Francisco.
